Kids And Water Safety – Follow These 6 Rules
19 May
Summertime is a fun time. You and your children will probably be at the pool, at the beach, or enjoying the river or lake. We all want to have the best time possible, but we can only do that if we follow some safety tips when it comes to playing around the water.
Let’s take a look at a few water safety rules that will keep your family safe and having fun all summer long:
1. Whether you have a pool at home or you are a guest at another pool, check to be sure all gates are secured. Be sure all alarms are in working order and everyone knows the rules of the pool.
2. Running around, chasing, or general goofing off around the hard surface of a pool should be forbidden. Also, a lake or river’s edge can be unpredictable, possibly quite deep or full of hazards. Instruct your family that horseplay in these circumstances will not be tolerated.
3. One adult should be in charge of watching the children at all times. Kids can move awfully fast, and if other adults are swimming and having fun, they may take their eyes off for a moment. Designate one responsible adult to take on this task.
4. Make sure your children take swim lessons that teach survival strokes and basic water safety along with basic strokes. All American Red Cross certified programs incorporate water safety into their swim lessons.
5. When a thunder storm is brewing, you may not see lightning right away. That doesn’t mean it’s not there. As a matter of fact, when you hear thunder, lightning is in the area. Remove yourself and your family from the water at the first sign of a storm; don’t wait for the lightning bolts to appear.
6. If you and your children are swimming in the ocean, follow the flag warnings and be cautious of the tides and rip currents. Keep children in safety vests and in shallow water. Children and adults need to learn how to respond in the event a rip current occurs.
Summer water fun means many things. You could be building sandcastles at the beach or floating on a raft down a lazy river. Whether you are surfside or lakeside, your family needs to pay attention to these basic water safety rules so you all have a fun summer!
