17 May
The hand is a very difficult thing to draw. It is a very intricate area of study and you can spend many years devoted to studying it alone. (To learn more about drawing portrait, check out this article on how to draw human eyes)
There are many great books devoted to this topic and I highly recommend that you explore them.
In this article, I am going to condense what I’ve learn about drawing hands into a few pointers that will help you in your effort.
The items in this list are actually quite simple (and they were meant to be) but many beginners still miss them.
Just follow the advice that they offer and you well be glad you did.
Let’s go:
Things To Remember When Sketching Hands
Number 1: Hand are not made up of perfect straight lines.
Instead the finger tips and the knuckles form an arch across the hand. Also the figures bend slightly toward the space between the Middle Finger and the Ring Finger.
This will help make your drawing look more realistic.
Number 2: There are 3 parts to your hand: the base of the thumb, the meaty part at the bottom of your pinky, and the row that is positioned beneath your knuckles.
Number 3: The skin web between the fingers should be a “U” shape instead of a “V” shape or a flat line.
Number 4: The hand naturally curls towards itself. It doesn’t just lay flat when you relax it.
This is how the hand naturally behaves; be sure to capture this when drawing hands.
Number 5: When drawing the back side of the hand, always remember to include these 3 things: the knuckles, the veins, the wrinkles at the joints of the finger
There you have it, just keep these things in mind when you are drawing hands and you will have a very useful mental check list that will guide you. But you should still seek out books on this subject.
There is nothing better than looking at examples after example of what to do right to really imprint that knowledge into your brain.
