Five Great Horror Movies For That Perfect Movie Marathon
24 Apr
One great way to share a night with friends, no matter how old you are, is taking in a few horror movies. Popcorn, laughter and screams can make for great fun, especially if you happen to own a home theatre system.
Many of these classics have been released recently on Blu Ray in High Definition, but they are also available on the web, so you could download or stream them too, if you have the capabilities. A few of the latest televisions have internet access now, so you can download the films directly to the TV. Or you can connect a projector to your computer and create your own little cinema in your lounge area.
These five movies are the perfect recipe for a great night of horror movies. It is a selection of titles that have been made over the last fifty years, showing that great horror never dates. Not only were these great scary movies, but they were also just great films, being nominated for awards, and in many cases winning. While many may stick their noses up at horror movies, these are five films that everyone should see at least once.
The first movie to put on your list should be the Alfred Hitchcock classic, Psycho. Made in 1960, it is still as eerie and shocking today, with a brilliant performance from Anthony Perkins. Bates Motel is always worth a visit, unless of course you are Janet Leigh. Do not make the mistake of getting the re-make which starred Vince Vaughn as Norman Bates and is not nearly as scary. Psycho was nominated for 4 Oscars.
William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist came out in 1973 on the silver screen. Since then its been scaring people around the globe, and this tale of a possessed teen girl played by Linda Blair, who received a nomination for an Oscar for her role, is spine-chilling still today. The Exorcist was the winner of 2 Oscars, for Best Writing and Sound, while it also received another 8 nominations.
Steven Spielberg’s Jaws was an instant classic when it was released in 1975. It may have a few silly special effects compared to more modern material but it is still as frightening as ever. Jaws captured 3 Academy Awards, including one for original score by John Williams.
Picking a film adapted from a Stephen King novel is always a good choice for a scary night. And not many are better than 1990′s Misery which saw Kathy Bates play an obsessed fan who rescues an injured famous writer played by James Caan after a car crash. Bates won a Best Actress for her portrayal of Annie Wilkes.
The Sixth Sense, made my M Night Shyamalan in 1990, and arguably his best film ever, picked up 6 Academy Award Nominations. Bruce Willis leads the cast but it is the Oscar-nominated performances of Haley Joel Osment as the child who can see dead people, one of the best acting performances by a child ever, and Toni Collette as his mother, that steal the show.
These movies are just a few examples of the horror genre and should be seen though by all movie lovers. For the horror buffs who have seen these a thousand times there are so many other options as the genre has expanded to include so many other films, from Asian ghost stories to the independent gore flicks.
